I grew up just north of
Auckland, New Zealand, and studied at The University of Auckland in
the Engineering Science Department and did Vehicle Routing
Problems (VRP) for my Ph.D. At this time I was involved in some crew
scheduling at Air New Zealand. In August 1996 I moved to Gothenburg,
and started working at Carmen. I really enjoy cycling and in summer
2000, I cycled down to Malmö and then over the Öresund Link to Copenhagen.
While living in Sweden I've been introduced to innebandy (indoor hockey).
I'm not very good at it, but I really enjoy it!
Today
I am responsible for the optimization related development of the pairing
product, as well as having a co-ordinating role for optimization in
general. This involves analysis of client requirements, tracking market
and academic developments, and design and implementation of new functionality.
This work is shared with a small team of optimization developers,
whom I also manage. In order to learn about new requirements and developments,
we visit clients at their workplace, and attend various conferences.
Why
Carmen?
When I was considering starting work at Carmen I wanted two things,
the opportunity to travel, and the opportunity to apply operations
research (OR) techniques to real world problems. Carmen met, and has
exceeded, both requirements. The main part of my work has been to
develop and apply the latest OR techniques to solving pairing problems.
While this took some time and effort to develop, the results of this
are now in production at our client installations. It is very satisfying
to see your work used to solve theoretical problems that occur in
reality.
